HVAC: Members and service professionals sound off

We recently polled both Angie’s List members and CompanyConnect service professionals about HVAC maintenance.

Only 22 percent of Angie’s List members thought the brand of air filter they use for their HVAC system was important—but 40 percent of service professionals said it is.

We asked business owners to share tips and strategies for keeping the doors open and new customers calling. Here's what they said:

  • If you know that a certain brand or make works better for your customers’ systems, do you make sure to let them know? Try explaining why you prefer—or don’t prefer—one brand over the other so they’ll understand.

The majority of service professionals agreed that regular maintenance is necessary to keep all systems in top condition.

About 21 percent of Angie’s List members don’t change their HVAC filters regularly or find themselves forgetting when they need to be changed. Even the 79 percent who said they changed their filters regularly have trouble remembering—24 percent of them have no method for remembering and several indicated that they would like a way to remember.

  • How do you remember to change your filters? Share your tips and advice with your customers, even if they say they change their filters regularly.

  • When should filters be changed? Some Angie’s List members said they change them monthly, but others said they change them quarterly or bi-annually. Does it depend on their system? Be sure to let your customers know so they aren’t stuck guessing.
