Going green doesn't mean you have to sacrifice, go without or inconvenience yourself and your company.
- Keep it handy. Make a point to invest in compact fluorescent light bulbs, refillable ink cartridges, recycled or recyclable paper products and sustainable materials for your business. Ditch the Styrofoam coffee cups and bring in washable mugs and get refillable water bottles instead of prepackaged bottled water. Added benefit: Think of how much you can save on overhead costs while you reduce trash.
- Compost. Plenty of common office items can be composted, which will reduce your trash output and generate earth-friendly material. Grab a recycled plastic compost bin and toss in the office coffee grounds, tea bags, junk mail and scrap paper (shredded), lunch leftovers (minus any meat or dairy), cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towels and some lint. All composts need are air, a little moisture and food to keep going, which requires very little effort on you and your employees' part, and the composted material can be used for landscaping outside of your office or at home. - Learn and teach. Become a green expert in your field. Learn as much as you can about green options and then offer information to your staff and clients. Discover new ways green initiatives can save you and your clients money. Find out about different green certifications that are available nationally and in your state and get the appropriate accreditations. Spread the word and grow the green.
