Tips from Angie

Installation pros share secrets of success.

In a recent nationwide poll, 90 percent of Angie's List members experienced a successful installation on recently purchased appliances. To help you keep up the good work, we gathered advice from successful installers around the country.

  1. Never schedule an installation before the product is fully assembled.
  2. Become an expert on the product you're installing. If you can't answer a customer's question, admit it and then go find out.
  3. Don't cut corners training your staff. If using subcontractors, establish a long term relationship with them and train them how you expect work to be done.
  4. Consider a minimum service charge.
  5. Make sure the customer knows how to use the appliance before you leave, and that the area is clean.
  6. Avoid excessive warranty calls by purchasing high quality products. It's more cost effective in the long run because the customer will be happier to have it done right the first time versus scheduling multiple appointments.
  7. Pay attention to items that are difficult to install or tend to go bad over time, and find better alternatives.
  8. Overestimate the completed time frame so you're not rushed.
  9. Check the work you do and then check it again. Return trips never reflect well on your company and don't add to your bottom line.
  10. Consider a pre-install site survey — there's no "typical" install; they're all different!
